So Elder Anderson traveled all the way to Auckland to give the young adult a fireside this week! I was so excited to get the chance to go and listen to him speak. The YSA in my ward rented a bus to take us all to the North Shore to go listen to him. The church bus was leaving from our stake center so Christine, Heidi, Anna, and I all figured out which public bus would drop us off closest to the church so we could ride with all of our YSA friends to the fireside.
The four of us make it on to the public bus to head towards the stake center, when we realize that we have a grumpy lady driver today. She wouldn’t give us the $2 student bus rate, instead she charged us $3.80. But we weren’t going to let that get us down because we were all excited to go listen to the general authority speak to us.
After about five minutes of the bus driving we realize that she is not taking us the way we were expecting to go. Our bus is heading up through random neighborhoods and then it starts heading towards the motor way (they call the freeway, motor way) We finally press the button because we don’t want to be taken any further from the church or our homes because the bus was carry on in the completely opposite way we needed to go.
Confused and frustrated we get off the bus into the rain, realizing that we now had at least a fifteen minute walk up a huge hill to make to the stake center where the YSA was meeting in about 5 minutes. So in the rain all four of us were running in our dresses, up hills, we were quite the scene. We had two umbrellas but they were not much use. Christine’s umbrella kept popping out the wrong way and with the rain and wind and humidity my little umbrellas wasn’t much use either. Poor Christine even cut her foot on glass while we were running. With blood and all we raced on in hopes to see one of the Lord’s Apostles speak.
Alas, when we made it to the church no one was there. We tried to get into the building to at least call someone to pick us up be we were stranded. No car, no people we knew, no phone. So we decided to knock on a random persons house to call our professor Dr. Jacobs to come pick us up. The four of us stood pathetically with wet hair, running makeup, and soggy dresses as we knocked on the nearest door. I nice man welcomed us in and let us use his phone until our professor came to get us. After about ten minutes professor Jacobs came and rescued us from our failure attempt to attend the fireside. He kindly gave us a ride home because it was too late to make it to the north shore.
It was a sad failed attempt but we couldn’t stop laughing at how helpless and pathetic we were. It is such a weird feeling to have no car and no phone like we would at home. We’re also hoping that we can still receive partial blessings for the effort that we made trying to get to the fireside, even though we didn’t actually get to hear the words he spoke.
Anna drew a beautiful illustration of us running with our useless umbrellas and in our church clothes to try to make it to our destination, the stake center.
